Hunger and chronic malnutrition are on the rise in Zimbabwe, the UN Office for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs has said that the condition is really bad. The ministry is working in conjunction with the nutrition cluster of organisations in the country that include UN Children’s Fund, International Organisation for Migration, Goal, World Vision, the World Food Programme and Plan International. The condition is very miserable there. It is a matter of deep concern for the government and it is very necessary to curb this problem of malnutrition and related issues, as soon as possible.

NATO’s military mission in Libya has finally come to an end. The decision comes after the 15-nation United Nations Security Council unanimously voted to end the mandate that had authorized military action in Libya. NATO allies have hailed the mission a success, with no casualties on their side and few civilian deaths. Cash-strapped governments have been eager to bring their planes home and focus on the bigger war in Afghanistan. NATO decided to end the mission even though interim Libyan leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil asked for the alliance to stay until the end of the year, warning on Wednesday that Gaddafi loyalists still posed a threat. Unified Protector, the name of NATO’s Libya operation, was intended to protect civilians and civilian-populated areas under attack or threat of attack. NATO aircraft will continue to monitor the situation on the ground until Monday.

Many entrepreneurs do not bother with paying into a pension scheme for themselves, believing that their business is their pension. Entrepreneurs certainly have the advantage, should they wish, of not having to retire. I will work on new ideas forever, it is what I do and I love it. Therefore the feeling of insecurity during old age does not affect entrepreneurs as much as it does an employee, who is effectively going to be fired one day.
Paying in to a sound pension scheme is a good idea for two reasons.
1 Excellent entrepreneurs work from the assumption that if something could go wrong it will, and plan accordingly. This is good entrepreneurship.
2 Whatever else happens, money in your pension scheme will be secure. (more…)
Traditionally small firms have taken on their bigger competitors by specializing in a niche. For example, Tie Rack competed in one niche against major high street clothing retailers like Marks & Spencer, but only clearly in one line. However, times change and it takes longer for companies to adapt to those changes. Many believe it’s the smaller company that moves more quickly to take advantage but this is not necessarily the case.
What they notice is that smaller companies can change more quickly if they notice those changes. The arrival of the internet and the continuing developments in its uses and technologies have reinvented marketing. To the internet there are no foreign markets. Small firms can take orders overnight from around the world that previously would have meant setting up local offices. (more…)
From the beginning, make it clear to vendors that your company pays promptly in order to earn credit terms for large projects.
When Tim Williams and Craig Woerz launched Media Storm, a media planning and buying agency in Norwalk, Connecticut, in 2001, they wrote into the pro forma financial statement of their business plan the need to prepay their initial purchases of time and space in major media.
“I had been in the cable industry since 1980, my partner since 1990, so we recognized that we may have to prepay invoices because media don’t extend credit to start-ups,” Tim explains. “That was part of our initial capitalization.”
Sure enough, their very first project in November 2001 was to buy 30-second commercial time on a national cable network to promote a movie. (more…)
Building rapport with a group is a skill that many people develop naturally through everyday life experience. To be successful as a presenter you need to be able to take your skills in connecting with others to a higher level. This process begins with being consciously aware of how your behavior takes you closer to or farther away from your goal. Observe what works and what gets in the way. Obviously you need to do more of the former and less of the latter. By putting your approach under a microscope you’ll gradually find out what works in different situations with a variety of people.
Connecting with people you know already
When you’re presenting to small groups of people you know well, building rapport is relatively easy. Before getting down to business you can reconnect through small talk – catching up on news and a bit of office banter if it’s an internal presentation.
If you’re presenting to a client you’ve met before you may spend a few minutes chatting about a common interest, the results of a football match or some other current news story.
Obviously if you’re dealing with ‘Driver’ behavioral types you need to keep this to the minimum or they’ll switch off, especially if they’re tight on time.
